Advice on Eating Well to Maintain a Healthy Weight

Important points
A range of nutrient-dense foods is part of a diet that helps control weight and support health.
Having a healthy diet can help reduce the chance of developing major health issues.

Why it matters
Healthy eating habits extend life expectancy and reduce the risk of major health issues like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Healthy nutrition can help patients with chronic illnesses manage their ailments and avoid complications.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans state that a balanced diet should:

emphasize whole grains, fruits, vegetables, protein, a sugar-free diet, and healthy fats.
comprises a variety of nutritious protein sources, including seafood, meats, poultry, eggs, legumes (beans and peas), soy products, nuts, and seeds.
is low in cholesterol, trans fats, saturated fats, sodium (salt), and added sugars.
Stays within your daily energy requirements. Your age, sex, height, weight, and degree of exercise can all be used to determine how many calories you require each day.

Vegetables
Use a herb like rosemary to spice up grilled or steamed vegetables. Vegetables can also be sautéed (pan-fried) in a nonstick pan with a tiny bit of cooking spray and olive oil. For a quick side dish, try canned or frozen vegetables; simply microwave and serve. A quick and easy way to add color and nutrients to stews and omelets is to add frozen peppers, broccoli, or onions.

Seek out canned and frozen vegetables that have not been salted.

Fill a bowl with vibrant veggies like red peppers, broccoli, and carrots.
Try a different veggie every week for variation.

Fruits
Fruits that are tinned, frozen, or fresh are excellent options. Try fruits like mangos, pineapples, or kiwis instead of apples and bananas. Try frozen, canned, or dried fruit when fresh fruit isn’t available. Fruit that has been canned or dried may have added syrups or sugars. Select canned fruit packed in its own juice or in water.

Foods high in protein
Try baking or grilling healthier versions of your favorite meal if it calls for breading chicken or frying fish. Perhaps even try substituting beans for meats. For recipes with fewer calories, ask friends or look them up online and in publications. You may be shocked to discover that you have a new favorite food!

Dairy products without added sweeteners
Dairy is a great source of vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and protein. Consider ordinary or Greek-style yogurt without additional sweeteners in addition to milk. These might be a nice alternative to dessert and come in a number of flavors. Other possibilities include fortified dairy substitutes and lactose-free and lactose-reduced products.
