Grilling season has arrived! Let me share my favorite BBQ sauce recipe with you if you don’t already have it.

Spices like cumin and smoked paprika give this simple homemade BBQ sauce a smokey, savory flavor along with sweetness and acidity. A batch will stay in the refrigerator for weeks, and it only takes 20 minutes to prepare on the stove. When we have it on hand, we can add flair to whatever we’re cooking!

I’ll be the first to acknowledge that barbecue sauce can be controversial, having lived in Austin for a long time. How does yours taste, tomato? Vinegary? Is it sweet due to the presence of molasses and syrup?

This recipe for barbecue sauce is thicker in consistency and has a tomato foundation.  I wouldn’t argue, though, that it accurately reflects any of the regional varieties of barbecue sauce that can be found in the US.    It consists of the following:

The silky smoothness of the sauce is due to ketchup.

I like my barbecue sauce sour, so I use a lot of apple cider vinegar! It has an incredible zingy kick.

Water: It reduces the thickness and gloopiness of the sauce.

Brown sugar: To make things sweeter. This sauce’s traditional BBQ flavor comes from the molasses overtones.

A prominent component in many classic barbecue sauce recipes is tamari, also referred to as Worcestershire sauce.    I add tamari to make it vegetarian-friendly.    I always have it on hand, and it tastes just as tasty!    You can also use soy sauce if you’re not gluten-free.

  •  Yellow mustard: It intensifies the sour vinegar and gives it a slight sting.
  •  For more umami, use powdered garlic and onion.
  •  Grind cumin for a deeper earthiness.
  •  The addition of smoked paprika gives the sauce a rich, smokey flavor.
  •  The complete recipe, with measurements, is shown below.

  • For a fiery BBQ sauce, add a touch of cayenne pepper, hot sauce, or adobo sauce from a can of chipotles.
  •  Put everything in a medium-sized pot.
  •  Simmer over medium heat.    Next, turn the heat down to low.
  •  stir frequently for 20 minutes, until the sauce has thickened.

That’s it!    Before incorporating the sauce into your favorite barbecue dishes, taste it and make any necessary adjustments.

 How to Use Barbecue Sauce

BBQ sauce can be utilized in many different ways, even though it’s frequently used on meat dishes like pulled pork, ribs, and chicken wings.

  •  Try it on sandwiches with BBQ jackfruit.
  •  To prepare BBQ tofu, brush it over cooked tofu.
  •  Use a BBQ to make a burger! Add BBQ sauce and caramelized onions to the top of a veggie burger to make it look good.
  •  Cover the crispy cauliflower with it.
  •  Serve it as a dip. We adore it with sweet potato fries, air fryer onion rings, and air fryer French fries.

How to Maintain the Freshness of Your Homemade Barbecue Sauce

Store the sauce in the refrigerator or in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Freeze it for up to three months to extend its shelf life. Put the frozen sauce in the fridge to defrost it overnight.
